What Happens During a Comprehensive Dental Exam?
Coming in for a check-up shouldn’t feel stressful. Your smile deserves careful attention, and a dental exam is simply our way of getting to know your unique oral health. We look at the big picture and the small details, all to create a personalized plan just for you.
When you step into Dr. Maseko’s Clinic, we don’t just count your teeth. We create a data blueprint of your oral health. This foundation is where the precision of our care begins, moving far beyond the quick glance and general assessment.
We offer thorough oral examinations designed to keep your teeth, gums, and overall oral health in top condition.
What’s the Purpose of a Comprehensive Oral Examination?
Is it simply to tell you if you have a cavity? Not at all. The comprehensive oral examination is our surgical precision audit. We review your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. It's the first step toward preserving your health, not just repairing damage.
What to Expect
During your comprehensive dental exam, we will:
Assess your bite
Track any early signs of gum disease
Perform an oral cancer screening
Check for cavities, plaque
Review your medical history and discuss any dental concerns
Create a tailored care plan to maintain or improve your oral health
What Are We Looking For?
This check-up creates a baseline – a clear map of your dental health – so we can spot any changes quickly in the future.
Seeing the Unseen: Why We Take X-Rays
A lot of important information is hidden beneath the surface, which is why we rely on X-rays.
Intra-oral Radiographs (The Close-up): These small X-rays focus on specific teeth. They are the best way to detect decay hiding between teeth and to check the health of the bone that supports your tooth roots, which are problems that are impossible to see during a visual exam.
Extra-oral Radiographs (The Wide View): If we need to see your whole jaw, or plan for a wisdom tooth removal or braces, we take these full-view X-rays. They give us a clear, broad view of your jaw structure.
Scaling and Polishing: Getting Truly Clean
Even with the best brushing, plaque eventually hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be brushed away. Our scaling and polishing is a professional cleaning that uses specialized tools to gently remove this tartar from your teeth and just under the gum line. A thorough polish follows to leave your teeth smooth, making it harder for plaque to stick. We finish with oral hygiene instruction to share simple tips that keep your smile bright and healthy between visits.
Why Regular Exams Matter
You can't treat what you can't see. Our diagnostics ensure that your treatment plan is based on your specific needs. Routine dental check-ups are essential for preventing minor issues from becoming major ones. Early detection allows us to provide timely, cost-effective treatment and help you maintain a confident, healthy smile.
Who It’s For
Comprehensive oral exams are recommended for all patients, including children, adults, and seniors. Whether it’s your first visit or a routine check-up, we’ll ensure your experience is thorough and reassuring.

FAQs
Does a root canal hurt?
We use local anesthesia, so you should feel no pain during the procedure, only pressure. The root canal actually relieves the severe pain caused by the internal infection!
What is the difference between a filling and an Inlay?
A filling is done directly in the mouth in one visit. An Inlay is custom-made in a lab for a stronger, better-fitting restoration when more tooth structure is missing.
